Solar Energy

Solar energy, if applied right, can be very beneficial to the building energy balance and cost.

PV (Photovoltaic) systems generating electricity are relatively easy to implement since they can feed electricity into the grid when it is not needed on site. Pending regulation this means more or less revenue in net-metering in feed in tariff schemes. Main considerations are good exposure to the sun, and a structurally sound installation.

Solar thermal systems require further consideration. All energy produced needs to be used on site at a time near production. However, most production happens in summer, when the least heat is needed. Optimum operating temperatures are low, making them less beneficial in high-temperature applications. This is not be a problem in modern systems that are designed to operate at low temperatures.
